Niman's Way candles are made by hand throughout the entire process. Small batches of soy wax are melted, dyed
and blended with fragrant oils. This allows the candle maker to have complete control over each batch from
wax temperature, to depth of color, and the intensity of fragrance. There can also be minute differences in shades
of color of the candle due to the lack of any machinery in our process. Only two ingredients are added to the wax:
fragrance and dye. At all stages, the candle in liquid form is manually blended and inspected.
Soy wax used at Niman's Way Candleworks is from 100% American agriculture and we use American made high
temperature cotton wax wick. Also, we select "jelly jars", 8 oz and 12 oz, that are USA made.
Soy wax is a container wax: that means it will not stand on its own as a taper candle or tower candle. Soy
wax is maleable: it will melt in high temperatures (as leaving a candle in a hot car) or it will contract (as leaving
it in a cold area) and pull away from the jar. Neither action of short term heat or cold will have an effect upon the
fragrance. Once wax is placed in a cool or warm area, the soy wax will, once again, relax in and reform to
the shape of the container.
WE DO NOT USE ANY SOLIDIFIERS, HARDENERS, ARTIFICIAL INGREDIENTS, ZINC OR METALS TO OUR WAX OR WICKS.
QUESTION: Why doesn't Niman's Way Candles come in deep or brilliant colors? Why don't
you add sparkles, spangles or decorations in the wax?
ANSWER: Deep colors, intense colors, mean that there is a high ratio of dye to wax, and, those
colors can interfer with the soy wax oil burning in the containers.
Soy wax does not lend itself successfully to be used with deep colors. Any time a flame has to pull color up the
wick and burn it off, that relfects there is less fragrant molecules being released into the room and more dye molecules
being burned by the flame. At Niman's Way, we use the least amount of color possible. Also,
we can special order any of our candles without dye for our customers who wish a pure white candle.
Any ingredient in the wax has to be manipulated by the flame: either it has to be burned off as the soy bean oil
travels up the wick, or it has to be pushed away from the flame to allow the oil to travel up the wick.
Anything added to the wax, on a molecular level, takes up space, reducing the amount of fragrance molecules in the wax.
Niman's Way Candleworks has, as its top priority, to provide as much fragrance in the wax as possible. We
want our customers to enjoy pure fragrant candles without any fumes, toxins or soot from sparkels, ribbons or glitter
in the wax.
Question: Should I trim the wick of a new candle before I burn it?
Answer: No, do not trim the wick of a new candle before you burn it the
first time.
The wick, at the first burn, should be left a little long to make a flame that will start
melting the wax and pull the oil up the wick. When the wick has a "mushroom" look to it, extinguish the flame. Then
when cool, remove the mushroom and trim the wick to about 1/4" or less before the next use. Keep the wick trimmed before
each use to ensure there is a moderate flame.
